Photos from Pat Bourke

A new batch of photos has been sent in by Pat who worked here in Lloret back in the early 70s,
Pat says......
''I was quite amazed to find your blog on the internet. My friend Diane and I worked in Lloret for two season, first at the La Cala, back when we had go-go dancers and the following year at Maxims and the 1900. We were both from Liverpool and stayed the first year in a pension on Calle Mediodia, just up the road from the Captains Arms. The following year we shared an apartment with Jane Legg from the smoke and George (another scouser). Diane passed away last year in Stoke on Trent''

When I replied to Pat to thank her for the photos I asked how she had come across the 'Old Stuff' this is her reply to me.........
''Actually my husband and I were watching TV when an ad for Republic of Doyle came on and one of the main characters is called Malachi. I had a flash back to Anne and Malachi and I googled Malachi Lloret de Mar and low and behold there you were .What about Cockney Big Pat Sullivan; Geordie Pat and also Billy Williams are any of them still in touch?''

She also asked me about Steve and Claire Watson and also Malachi and his first wife Anne, so she now knows that Claire and Anne have since passed away.

Malachi's Photos

Two photos from Malachi today...both very old!
The one from La Cala is dated 1970 so I should think the other is about the same year, sorry but no names for anyone in these photos at all...only Malachi on the left in the top picture.

Malachi's Photos

After the last few days of sadness I hope I'm doing the right thing here by trying to get back to normality by once again publishing photos on the blog - Stevies photos will still be here, find them by clicking on the link for 'Buzzbys' under the 'Featured Bars and Events' heading, also this will also find a great photo sent in by Sue of both Stevie and Rish together behind the bar in Buzzby's.

These two photos come from Malachi, with the first one from Rabbie Burns back in 1971, as for the next one I'm not sure whats going on here ! I believe it was some sort of set up photo but not sure why, I didnt get chance to ask Malachi. Next time I see him I'll have to find out...unless anyone out there knows?

Tony Batey's Lloret Album.

Both photos today are from Rabbies in 1971
Tony has given me all names for everyone in the above photo, from left to right is Sally, Tony, Malachi, Moyra and Len. One thing I've noticed with all the photos I've had sent which feature dogs is that we always get the dogs name, Tony has also given me the dogs name....anyone else out there know it ?
Malachi is in the second of today's photos on the left, at the back in the centre is Ian 'Gibby' Gibson in front of him is Anne Marie and next to her is John Mackenzie...Any more names for this photo?

More from Tony Batey

Two photos again from Tony...The top one from 1971 in the old Rabbie Burns. Tony gave me the names of the trio of women, they are Anne Marie, June and Marion. Marion is still here in Lloret, and still has her wicked sense of humour ! Does anyone recognise the couple on either side?
The second photo this time outside Rabbies in 1972 with Malachi at the front, no more names for this one but Tony did tell me the story of the wooden carving above the door...
It was done by someone in Blanes, but later stolen and somehow ended up in Scotland. Tony found out where it was and eventually it came back to Lloret, and now Hammy has placed it above the bar in the new Rabbie Burns!

Rob Roy 1970s

One here from (Aunty) Jean which she asked especially to be included as soon as possible. To the right is Billy, I'm not sure who the other person is...may be some else does?
The next photo from John McSwan, taken in the Rob Roy in the 70s- there he is right at the back. (much better looking then, than he is now) Sorry John! Also with the kilt on is Malachi, who I have often heard described as the best tour guide on the Costa Brava...sorry again John!!
Who are the others in the photo?

Another photo from Omelet below, taken on the White Horse steps. Tommy Stone is there and who else ?

Joe's Photos

Thanks to Joe for these photos, in the first one is Malachi at the back with Stevie to the right, Joe says it was Stevie's first year in the Corner Inn, I'm not sure about the order of the details Joe gave for the other photos but If I'm correct then the next photo is Al Capones taken in 1981. I recognise Kenny, Mick and Albie.

A Funny tale from David!

David has sent another amusing story about his first attempt at his job as a tour guide......I must say that after visiting both the fountains and Montserrat this year I found David's story really funny!

Thank s David!!!

Hi Again Jackie
Gave you all a rest during the summer from my ramblings, but kept a regular eye on the blog, good old Mariano kept us happy with his super collection of old propaganda.

Anyhow....when I first arrived in Lloret during the early 70s I wanted to be a holiday rep but no one was interested without some sort of experience, so after a few weeks of knocking on doors I was offered a part time job guiding coaches for English speaking groups during the summer period. This meant a quick learning course of all the various trips on offer, so for a couple of weeks I went on all the different trips, many times with dear Malachi to Montserrat and other trips, I must say he was a super guide and I learnt a lot from him and later during my courier life I tried to emulated his professional style.
Well after a couple of weeks training I was offered my first job (solo) I was excited I had been on all the trips except the Saturday night trip to the famous dancing fountains on Montjuic in Barcelona but I was ready for anything!!
You guessed it? My first job was Saturday night the fountains, I got my papers in the office and was introduced to my coach driver Manolo from Andalucía who had arrived new to the Costa Brava that week looking for driving work, and they said in the office “I could help him out if he had any problems”!!!!)
Late Saturday afternoon we set off with a full coach and believe it or not it was great, we got to Barcelona parked up for an hour or so at Plaza Espana for shopping, went on from there to the harbour for a quick trip round and then on to the fountains.

THEY WERE SHUT!!!! Without notifying anyone the council had boarded up 8 foot high boards all round the fountains for cleaning works, the fountains were working, you could see 18 inches of coloured water jumping up above the boarding. Manolo said if we went down to the bottom of the Place Espana we might get a better view, he then proceeded to drive our coach down streets barley wide enough for a car, the passengers were ohh and ahhs as a balcony was missed by millimetres, Spaniards grabbed chairs from the street wondering why this Andaluth nutcase had come down their street with a bunch a gawking foreigners.
It was a better view down the bottom of the Plaza Espana, not a lot but if you stood way back you could see the general idea but as they were only on for half an hour we only had a short time left. So all back on the bus for the final item of the night which was a visit to the dancing horses who practiced on a Saturday night just along from the fountains but this meant we were down the bottom and we had to get up the top for the horses, Manolo scratched his head and in typical Spanish bravado said “no problemo” by now it’s pretty dark and we race off to catch the horses – right into a dead end cul-de-sac, now a 50 seater coach and residential streets don’t go – we did a 17 point turn and gently tapped 4 trees all to the bewilderment of the passengers, we raced on to find all the other coaches had parked outside the horses venue and all my lot raced off to catch what they could of the spectacular, but by the time the last one had got off the coach the horses had finished.
IT WAS QUITE A QUIET TRIP HOME? The passengers all got their money back and I decided perhaps I would make an all out effort to get a job as a courier.
